It is known that the WSC contents in fresh grasses are higher than those in hay, and the contents differ among seasons. This study was investigated to clarify the seasonal changes of WSC contents in grazing grasses and fermentation characteristics in the hindgut of Thoroughbred horses during grazing. The investigation was carried out on the grazing pasture for breeding mares on 5 private farms in Hidaka district in May, July and September. Fecal samples of a total head of 98 mares were collected and used for the analysis of fermentatkon characteristics. The WSC contents of gazing grasses were higher in May (l9. 2%DM) than those in July (13. 4%DM) and September (9. 3%DM). Although there were no differences in fecal lactic acid, the concentration of tota1 VFA was the highest in May, intermediate in Ju1y and the lowest in September (p\u003cO. 05). Fecal pH was lower in May (6. 08, p \u003cO. 05) than that in July (6. 35) and September (6.42). When the WSC contents in grazing grasses exceeded 15%DM, fecal pH in horses decreased.
