scaling)を探る研究の歴史は古く、生理学、生態学、農学、水産学や薬理学など様々な学問の基礎をなしてきた。代謝スケーリング関係には、異なる体サイズを示す種の集団(代謝速度の系統発生)を対象とする場合と、ある種における様々な体サイズからなる個体の集団(代謝速度の個体発生)を対象とする場合とがある。過去の研究の多くは、哺乳類や鳥類などの代謝速度の系統発生を対象としてきており、代謝速度の個体発生は無視されるか、代謝速度の系統発生と同じであるかのように曖昧に扱われてきた。その一方で、代謝速度の系統発生と代謝速度の個体発生の生物学的な意味は明確に異なっており、両者は厳密に区別されるべきとの指摘もなされてきている。そこで本論では、代謝速度の系統発生と個体発生の違いの整理を試みる。さらに、代謝速度の個体発生が、これまで生態学において重視されてきた「食う-食われるの関係」をはじめとする生物間相互作用と密接に関係し合っていることの実証例を紹介し、今後の研究の方向性について議論する。
